The Montessori Methods for Dementia™, is a non-pharmacological approach to working with people with dementia. The methods are based on the educational principles and practices of Italian physician, Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) and adapted for those who are deeply forgetful.

Emphasis is placed on re-discovering and supporting the person behind the dementia. Activities with meaning and purpose are put back into people’s lives, based on their needs, interests, skills and abilities. And yes, those living with dementia still do have abilities of value to be maintained, re-developed and used. They too may continue to contribute to family and community life.

Putting the methods into practice as a Consultant at L’chaim Retirement Homes in Toronto since January, 2012, I have observed wonderful breakthroughs; people who had stopped reading are reading again; a woman who had few words left in her vocabulary is singing and reading lyrics (this is also someone who could only grasp a piece of paper with much effort and a shaky hand in January and is now tossing a beach ball back and forth). Another resident has resumed playing the piano.

Responsive (undesired or challenging) behaviours are reduced or eliminated when using the methods, because the needs of the person with dementia are being met. Boredom and loneliness are curtailed, self-esteem is improved and communication between family members is enhanced.

Messaging is placed in the environment as required to support the person who is deeply forgetful. This reduces the stress of trying to remember things they can’t remember.

Early intervention employing the Montessori Methods for Dementia™ may enable individuals to live longer on their own or with loved ones.

The Montessori Methods for Dementia™ were developed by Gail Elliot, Canadian Gerontologist and Dementia Specialist.

Carol Saba is certified in Montessori Methods for Dementia™. She teaches the methods and offers consulting services to long term care facilities, hospitals, retirement homes and families.
